Don't know what went wrong there. PNG and PPM files (which don't need conversion) display fine, and I can convert everything to PNG outside LyX, but I would like to figure out what the problem is. I'm pretty sure (one can never be positive with Windows) that's it's not a permissions issue, since LyX is able to create the lyx_timpdir... directory under .../tmp.
