I think, the days of "only LaTeX can have proper logical layout (with
\section instead of bold large text for section titles etc) are gone. Proper
used word will do this too. (And in many cases, using a publisher
provided style will be easier with word than with LyX.)

Besides the prize, my main argument would be stability and math output.
Even with large projects, LyX almost never crashes and if, it leaves an
emergency save in most cases. This is easily understood remembering that
the conversion to printed paper (or pdf) is done by a program independent
of LyX.

One thing I did not find in word is references out of a database.  With
LyX/LaTeX and bibtex, I can keep a database of references and just use
the cite key to get the proper reference entry for my citations. (There
are are said to exist extension programs for this, though.)
