I'm running out of arguments.. They've not even tried LyX and knock it already. Any good arguments why one should use LyX instead of word?
Alexander,
Why bother? If they are happy running Microsoft products, leave them to it. If you -- and your girlfriend -- get better grades because the typeset output from LyX is superior to the output provided by winWord, then take your higher grades and be satisfied.
Too often these efforts to convert the masses are futile and tend more to frustrate those who are trying to promote conversion. Think of LyX (and linux in general) as a competitive advantage in whatever venue you use it. Besides, we don't need to convince the rest of the world that we have the One Right Answer and you better join us. We don't. If others are happy in what they use, let them be and be comfortable with your own choices even if you are in a minority.
Remember: you cannot push water uphill. It takes a lot of energy to pump water uphill, and that energy can often be better applied elsewhere.
