I need to have a footnote refer to another footnote _or else_ multiple
references to the same footnote.

Is there a way to do this that maintains automated numbering? Browsing
has not turned up anything, yet.

The case here is a reference to names that appear more than once in the
book. It seems wasteful to repeat footnotes that all say the same thing
(who this obscure person was, for example).

Right now I have: "Hans Reichel und seine Frau, cf. x" and 'x' should
refer to an earlier footnote.

I suppose one could decide that only the first mention will be noted and
leave the reader to head for the index in case an earlier reference is
needed.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice, technical, editorial, philosophical.
