Sorry Paul, hadn't seen your reply.
After fonts reinstallation, windows reboot and lyx reconfiguration, it all
works fine now (not sure whether all these steps were necessary...). It
really surprised me that the fonts got damaged in the upgrade (I had
checked that they were still there), but all ends well.
Thanks again,

You're welcome. For future reference, if you have to reinstall the fonts, a reboot of Windows is not required.

I'm not 100% sure the upgrade caused the damage. I had the same thing happen when I upgraded from 1.4.2 to 1.4.3 (or maybe it was 1.4.1 to 1.4.2), and after I reinstalled the fonts and things worked again, I assumed the upgrade was the culprit. I even went so far as to remove the .../fonts/ subdirectory that LyX installed. Nonetheless, some time later the font problem reappeared. Reinstalling the fonts fixed it ... for a while. About the second or third time this happened, I actually did a binary comparison of the font files I was deleting and the ones I was installing. They were identical. So the files themselves are not damaged, but somehow reinstalling them resets something in Windows to point to the right files (or reloads the files into memory after memory images were damaged?). Bottom line: I still don't know why it happens, but periodically it does, and reinstalling the fonts fixes it.
