You are right - WinEdt only compiles it one time which is sufficient if there are only minor changes in the document. Is there any possibility of "short compile" in lyx, too?
I guess not, because lyx does not know if your 'minor changes' involve index or citation changes so it plays safe by running the correct number of runs. Bo
