Upgrading an app beyond what comes with the distro (Xubuntu 12.10 in this case) is a last resort in my life. Distros are kind of like a Chinese puzzle, and if you upgrade an app, a lot of times you need to upgrade a dependency, and that breaks other things... I never upgrade as a diagnostic test, but only if: 1) I'm sure it will fix it (known problem with my version, etc), or 2) I want the new version anyway (probably because of enhanced features) So far the LyX that ships with Xubuntu 12.10 looks like it's working just fine. All my eBooks compile on it, although I had to do a little fancy footwork with makeindex, which I'll discuss in a separate email. So, if anyone's using Memoir and things stop working when you upgrade, it might be as simple as commenting out stuff with the word "cleared" in it. Thanks SteveT
