I don't know for sure what the problem is, but I have a laptop with Windows
8.1 and LyX and it works fine. I am using LyX 2.1.0 and MiKTeX 2.9. You
might try to go to Tools->TeX Information and see what's there. It should
give you the path to the LaTeX class files. Also, Help->LaTeX configuration
should generate a document that tells what classes, fonts, etc. your LyX is
aware of. If Richard is right (highly likely) and LyX is having trouble
finding the LaTeX classes, then this should become evident when checking
the configuration as suggested, and needs fixed. I would try to go to
Help->About LyX and make sure you have MiKTeX (and Python, ghostscript,
etc) in the path prefix. If this doesn't help you get there, maybe you can
post yours. Mine says,
$LyXDir\bin;$LyXDir\Python;$LyXDir\Python\Lib;$LyXDir\Perl\bin;$LyXDir\imagemagick;C:\Program
Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin\x64;;C:\Program Files
(x86)\Vim\vim74;C:\Program Files (x86)\LyX 2.1\ghostscript\bin;C:\Program
Files\Inkscape-0.48
