Imho the 'clean' solution should allow setting the language even for
single words. A commom situation is citing other papers that are not
necessarily written in the language used by the current author.

Even if it is not possible to implement such a feature *right now* we
should avoid hard coding some partial solution that we might regret in a
couple of months.
