So, I was given a CHIP (getchip.com) and I've been playing with it... CHIP is a credit-card sized computer with an ARM CPU, 512M RAM(?) and 4GB of flash. For $9...
Anyway after much apt-get I have a mostly reasonable dev system and I compiled dlplus on it. With an FTDI usb-to-rs232 adapter it worked fine! (I know, I know, laddiealpha. Mono is going to take me *at least* all night to download. I'll get to it!) Admittedly the USB route isn't the greatest for a portable setup, but CHIP also has 3V UART I/O pins that would only require a level-converter...
