A) Where does one buy those edge pin things? I've seen those before, but couldn't actually find anywhere to buy them. It would have been perfect for a replacement rom adapter board for the main rom inside a model 100 without having to desolder the original socket to make enough room for the new, standard rom to also be socketed on the new board (so that it can be reprogrammed without a special adapter to the weird pinout). They are great, but punch in BA3760 into ebay or digikey etc. Nothing. The couple places that even display the picture don't have any kind of order button for it. A couple places had products that they made with them, but either they don't sell the legs themselves, or they had an entry but you can't actually get them, or it's like the guy just got a shipment once and was willing to sell some of his batch but it was a one time thing that you can't count on in the future. I see this now: http://www.solutions-cubed.com/products-page/connector/dip10/ , but I don't think that was there even a year ago. Even that one source, it looks like it's $2.25 for a single stick of 10 pins. That's $6.75 just to get enough pins for a single 28 pin board. They are an uncommon part that is not readily available in the way that ordinary pin headers are which come in bags of 10 sticks of 40 pins each for less than a single $1 and free shipping right on ebay. It seems as though only one company makes them, and almost no one sells them, and who knows when that one company will stop making them, if they haven't already. Anyone, anywhere, will always be able to get regular pin headers, cheap, forever. That's valuable and useful. The machined round pins are just about as readily available, and they are somewhat thinner than the square ones if you're worried about abusing sockets with pins that are too thick.

There's plenty of room for the board to overhang and there aren't even sockets in most positions anyway. Those NEC branded modules I mentioned were built exactly like that. These are just what I could grab from my facebook post a while back. The one nec module is in the only socketed position, and there's a pic with the original module in the same position for comparison, to show how much of that height difference is from the module vs the socket it's in, vs the original module in the same socket.
