You have to swipe across the bar codes surprisingly fast for it to work. Or at least *I* found it surprising! :-) The only other tip I can give: If you unscrew the tip and activate the wand, you will only see 2 very tiny very dim red dots. This is apparently normal, and not a sign that the LEDs have died of old age.
