Thanks Brian for the detailed instructions. It was the "multiple tries" that likely did me in -- the ribbon developed a kink that I could not straighten out. I happened to flip the cable and noticed that some metal traces had moved, then I said a lot of bad words and put the thing away. I'll leave it alone while I think about it some more before I try again.
I'm actually wondering what would be involved in replacing that entire ribbon cable and connector mess with a more sturdy solution, similar to the M-100? Surely that would not add so much weight, and it would have to be better for maintenance?
