You know I'm so used to that from some other lists I just assumed it was
in effect here too.
I do see there is a user-settable option to filter out html, but only
for digest mode.

If you're not using digest mode, and John says html filtering is not
applied to normal posts, then it is a mystery, except for maybe that one
post recently that had a too-large image in it.
