I'm sure you're right; it's almost identical to the cable used by an IBM ethernet II adapter but there's an extra tiny bump that prevents it from going into the socket. That's an old school PCMCIA MODEM telephone cable with A 41H8105 connector. You'd cram that huge crazy end into the PCMCIA modem and the other into your wall jack.
