I did the spraying and banging on the keys and eventually got all of
mine working on one of the 100s. It took a lot spraying and banging, though.
I would be interested in watching the disassembly process also.

Meh... maybe I will attempt it on one. I guess if I am going to go
through all that trouble to remove the films, might as well look at a
backlight mod.
As for a replacement LCD, it would probably be cheaper to come up
with a CPLD emulation to a more modern panel. I have yet to size it up,
but the LCD in the Cidco Mailstation 100/150 looks about the same
size. But while we are fantasizing anyway, an e-paper display would be
the most fitting replacement, IMO. Ultra low energy and no need for a
backlight.
