Yeah I'm trying to simulate a CMP system with up to 64 cores and 256 thread contexts in total. And I may create a batch of 8 m5 instances on the same machine. So there may be 2048 thread contexts simulated. My system worked fine with M5v2beta3. for beta 4, I'm not sure if I can open so many files but I'll try.

M5 needs a certain number of open files (just like any other process). You might want to try to increase the number of open files allowed by using ulimit (or something similar depending on what OS you're using).
