Getting the virtual keyboard to work outside of MA seems to be app specific. According to the manual, once you select Mobile Accessibility under language and keyboard, you then find a blank edit field in any app, then, depending on your phone, long press the select key, or enter key. After that, supposedly, when you find an edit field in an ap, the virtual keyboard automatically opens. I find this does happen in some aps... others I have to tap the screen once in an edit field, and in some others, I haven't been able to get it to work at all. I like using it, but it does appear to be a bit problematic on how to get it to work all the time.
