you can check to see if your m.a. is able to read out side of the m.a. home screen. when you click on any options and it would say, you are going to leave m.a. and you might lose speech, and once you click on ok, m.a. would stop speaking.
so if you want to have m.a. read everything out, then follow these steps.
go to apps, settings, accessibility, and make sure that both accessibility and mobile accessibility are checked, also if you have a power button on your phone, place a check on that as well, to have m.a. give you the ability to power down your phone, by holding down the power button.
i hope that helps.
good luck.

Silly question:
Do you have MA set to speak outside of the MA applications?

The long press of the power button is a pretty standard way to either turn
the phone off or bringing up a list of powering options.

Hi Dan,

I didn't see any list. I guess I will have to get my sighted wife to turn
off the phone while we are in the air. Thanks for your help.

I can only tell you how it works on my HTC phone, the MyTouch 4G Slide.

1. hold in the power button, usually on the top of the phone.

2. a window will come up with three options:
shutdown (or something similar)
airplane mode
and
restart

Using the physical trackpad, or arrows, select the option you want, like
shutdown,
and center click the trackpad.

Remember, this window is not part of MA so the screen navigation used in MA
apps won't work. You have to use the phone trackpad.

To turn the phone back on again, hold in the power button for about a count
of 4, then release it.
If it's like my phone, the phone will vibrate to let you know it is
powering
back up.

Hope this helps

Dan G
