Do you have the drive connected to the Express or the Time Capsule? If it's the Express, it could be because you are using at as an extender for the network. When I connect my HD, it is to my Base Station directly. However, I don't at all know for sure if this would be the reason. Someone with a lot more knowledge on this subject could comment more intelligently.
