I take your point about the extended network, that's the way my Airport Express 
is configured and may explain why it doesn't see the external hard drive.

This is all very interesting, I went up onto Apple's site just now to look at 
the tech specs of the Airport express, printers are mentioned yes - that is to 
say the fact that you can use a printer plugged into the USB port of an Airport 
Express is well documented and you can see the Printer connected to the Airport 
Express in action through a video - but no mention is made of using an Airport 
Express with a hard drive.

I have a Time Capsule here and its configured as a base station, I have an 
external USB drive connected to this, works fine but bare in mind that if 
you're planning to access drives this way the access time will be fairly slow, 
when it comes to drives and processing power the Airports are very under 
powered, you can find more information on this subject in the book Take Control 
Of you're Network I think its called.
