Hi Gordon,

I infer from your message that you are using the USB cable to tether your mac 
to your iphone rather than using the Wi-fi or bluetooth tethering options. If 
this is the case and you're not seeing a service named "iPHone USB in the 
services list of the network preferences pane in Lion, perhaps you could try 
manually adding the service to that list . The "Add service" button is located 
below the service list in that same pane.
