Hello:

I understand what you are saying; however, you can, in iTunes, designate an
MP3 file as an Audio Book and you can check the item "to remember last
played position."

The m4b files allow for book marking in iTunes and chapter separation whist
the mp3 files do not. I think  you can also keep your place in an m4b file
whist i have not had much if any luck with an mp3 file.
