Bootcamp is most definitely free. It's part of OSX. I have never had a genuine need to run both OSX and windows simultaneously, and I was very underwhelmed by vm fusion, so I use bootcamp exclusively. OK, I'll grant that it can't be installed totally independently, but I was fortunate to have a friend who could help, and once it was set up, it hasn't given me a moment's trouble.
