Hi Glenn, Ariadne GPS needs an active data connection to work, but it doesn't have to be your cell phone service. For example, I use a personal wi-fi hotspot with 4G connection service from Clear. With this turned on, I can run GPS apps on an iPhone 4 that I upgraded from (with no current carrier service), or any iPad with Wi-Fi+3G, even without an active data plan. This can also supply a connection for my laptop. When fully charged, the device has a battery lifetime of up to 6 hours, and can support up to 8 devices.
HTH.
