OK, I have answered my own question to an extent. If I completely shut down iTunes and restart it, then pressing Enter on the track in the file list will now, unlike before, play it. What I do not now know is why iTunes does not behave like this all the time. The problem with enter not working is not an isolated glitch but a problem which I have had with iTunes over several versions. I remember a similar problem with the radio streams not working with enter until I similarly restarted iTunes. These were national BBC streams so there would have been no problem with the streams or connection.
Anyway pressing enter is clearly supposed to be the answer to the question I was posing, even if it is only working sporadically. Thanks . I had worked this out fairly easily but that only relates to the console. Say I am playing a track from a particular album but then I want to play a track by a completely different artist and different album? Previous or next tracks or fast forward etc. are not appropriate here. The problem then becomes dragging the console into accord with the other files I select to try and play from the track in the files list. Hitting space now will only play the track I no longer want to listen to and will not play the new track I have selected from the file list. Command-right arrow on the Mac goes to the next track and command-left arrow goes back to previous track. Spacebar pauses and resumes play. Command-option-jright and left arrows acts as a fast forward and rewind. Take Care John D.
