I'm posting this to the list, as there is the potential to seriously damage your computer by trying to play (or rip) certain audio CDs it. This looks to be a legitimate threat, as I try to check out the validity of computer viruses before passing such warnings on (as a matter of fact, I created this warning).
The weird thing is that this is not a virus unleashed from the basement of some faceless dweeb; it is actually a copy protection scheme devised by a major record label to prevent the unauthorized copying of music. Certain commercially released audio CDs can actually damage your CD drive and/or computer. These specially formatted CDs do carry a warning on the label, however, many folks may not know of this, nor chance to scrutinize the label and might miss it, pop it in their computer, and WHAM: one boat anchor! Here is a link to an article detailing this situation: <http://www.macuser.co.uk/macsurfer/php3/openframe.php3?page=/newnews/newsar ticle.php3?id=1990> Here are links to websites monitoring this situation: http://uk.eurorights.org/issues/cd/docs/celdion.shtml And here: http://uk.eurorights.org/issues/cd/bad/ I'm not passing comment on whether the record companies have a right to do this or not. I'm just trying to give folks the heads-up about it in order to save them some grief. ------ End of Forwarded Message -- Mac Canada is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
