Hi Steve/Michael! ..... the 'error' messages run the whole gambit ..... addressing error, finder error, etc etc ...... so many I can't even remember them all - its been a frustrating 3+ weeks!!
The machine constantly freezes as well. I can't even keep Netscape (4.79) running, as it constantly has errors 3, 11, 5, etc etc. Yes, I did do a clean-install. First I had a 20 gig hard drive installed and the guy installing it partitioned it into 3 sections. I subsequently decided I didn't want 3 partitions so re-partitioned it myself into just one. Then I reinstalled 8.0 and 8.1. From there I installed 8.5, then 8.5.1, then 8.6. I've run Norton Disk Doctor so many times I'm afraid I've worn out the CD!! Also have run TechTools many times. Last night I downloaded a 'trial' version of CD SpeedTools from Intech and finally got the CD to work but unfortunately I've used up my time on the trial version so will order a 'paid' version today.
