It differs slightly on some machines, but somewhere on the 
motherboard, is a little button that has to be pressed when you 
install new hardware.

Pressing it completely resets the motherboard. The same thing can be 
accomplished (and on some Macs its the only way) by shutting the 
machine down, pulling the PRAM battery, and letting the machine site 
for a while before you put the battery back in and restart.

This is sometimes called the "Coke fix", supposedly because the tech 
who discovered it left a machine with the battery out to go have a 
coke. That was long enough for all the capacitors to drain, and reset 
the board.

Note: Don't just go poking around on the MoBo. Get a manual and a 
diagram before you touch anything.
