Okay, I'm not sure why you would have installed all the OS versions
in sequence. You only need to install 8.5, then the upgrade to 8.6.

By itself, though, I don't think that would cause the kind of
problems you're talking about.. Still, I would start my
troubleshooting by doing a "clean-install' (and by that I mean
selecting the "clean-install" option in the installer), from the 8.5
disc.

If you're still having trouble, then it isn't the OS that's causing
the problems. From there, you I see two possible problem areas.

1) RAM. Added any new RAM lately? Try checking Apple System Profiler
to make sure all your RAM is showing up in the correct slots.

2) Hard Drive. You said you put in a new drive - you may have gotten
a bad one. It happens. You can try two things to check this out.

First try doing a clean-install of 8.1, the OS you said you had
working fine before. See if it still does.

If you still have problems going back to 8.1, try re-installing your
old drive and see if problems persist.

BTW, drive errors may not show up in Norton if they're hardware related.

That part, at least, may be easy. Have you tried this ResExcellence hack?

I use it on several machines, including the C600. Works fine so far
on all systems up to 9.2.1.
