Apparently some external drives can be wiped during the upgrade.

"Your best bet is to disconnect all FireWire drives before installing
Panther," Wilson advised. "In fact, disconnect all external devices, then
test whether or not your system is able to properly recognize them
afterwards.

Another quote from Ben Wilson (of MacFixIt) in that article:


"According to Wilson, the problem affects FireWire 400 and 800 drives attached during the Panther upgrade procedure. Unattached drives are not affected."

As I understand it, the issue is not limited to FW drives connected *during* a Panther install. If you have one of the models that is affected, the drive is also at risk for losing data if it is connected to a machine any time after the Panther install.
