OK, I had that wrong.  The drive actually gets messed up.  Some folks have
done analysis and found that the directory structure and formatting is
messed up.  It only happens on Firewire 800 bridges but it can happen
whether they are connected through Firewire 800 or 400.  If you have a
Firewire 400 drive without the 800 option (or before 800s came out, you
are OK).  If you accidentally screwed things up, update the firmware,
reformat (NOT erase blocks), and then DataRescue can likely be used to
recover all of your data.
