It appears that in fact there is no actual data loss but the interface to the drive is screwed. If you don't have a tower Mac then that is as good as SOL as it gets. But, tower Mac ownders could just pop the drive out of their case and into their machine. Also, if the drive has a USB interface it can still be used that way.
If this works like other Firewire bridge firmware updates there is no problem installing it after panther. You run the software and then attach the drive.
