It took a lot of huffing and puffing and pointing out that they are charging for a service that was not requested or outlined in the original shipping fees or schedule.
That said, I avoid UPS and FedEx like a virulent case of the clap for cross border shipments due to all the reasons outlined already in this thread.
So much for free trade!

HST contains PST, so above is not strictly true.
Well, sort of, but only in NS, NF, and NB (IIRC). HST is federally-
collected, but includes a provincial portion of sales tax. But for
provinces with separate PST (e.g. Ontario, Quebec), Revenue Canada does
not charge PST at import (unless that changed recently). Can anyone
