What pmflynn says!
While your in there stick in a bigger hard drive. We put a 40G in ours a coupla years ago. Goes like stink and we're happy as clams. Keep recycling these babies as long as the crt lasts is my take. There's a limit of course to cost/benefit, but Ram and HDs are easy and well worth it.
I remember d/ling an iMac revD tech manual somewhere - might have been on Apple's site. Good pictures of teardown with instructions. Don't have time now to look. If you need it, just post again here.
Good luck

Let me do the honours :-)
http://www.theimac.com/ram_vram_steps.shtml for photos.
http://www.apple.com/support/imac/g3/doityourself/ for a QuickTime instruction film.
I did some upgrading myself last week (a *big* shout-out to a certain someone on this list who sold me some very reasonable RAM:-) ).
The biggest pain in the ass was actually getting the metal cage-y thing back into position. Everything else was surprisingly easy. Aside from the metal cage-thingy, the only other irritating trial was lining up the thing to slip back into casing so that the screws wouldn't catch.
Oh... while you're in there, you might want to consider dusting out as much as you can with aerosol... ah... air (?). I did and Limey coughed out 5-years' worth of a whole herd of dust bunnies. I'm sure Limey'll run cooler now, too.
