Older JetDirects are dirt cheap on eBay, but for the external ones make sure you only buy ones with a power supply. HP prices them like they're gold bricks. I wouldn't get anything older than the JetDirect EX Plus series, like the J2591A. That one has a single parallel port, RJ-45 and BNC connectors for 10 megabit ethernet. The same series JetDirect EX Plus 3 is the same except for having three parallel ports. The EX Plus and newer have flash updateable firmware. HP has a free program to download that will identify JetDirects and some other HP hardware then download the latest firmware off the internet and update it. Don't worry if it says the update failed. Exit and re-run the update program and it it cannot find the device at all, _then_ start worrying. ;) HP made internal Ethernet JetDirects for their printers starting with the LaserJet 4 (and contemporary inkjets like the DeskJet 1200C) with the MIO slot. Many of the LaserJet 5 series also have an MIO slot. The next slot was the EIO slot. Unfortunately for LaserJet II and III owners, HP never made an Ethernet multi-protocol print server for their XIO slot. Token Ring, yes, some other obscure mini/mainframe network systems, yes. Ethernet, no, dammit. And no TCP/IP in any form of XIO device. (Unless there was some 3rd party XIO Ethernet printserver that supported TCP/IP.) ===== "When you are wrestling for possession of a sword, the man with the handle always wins."
