Problem solved! The RJ11 lead between the modem and the phone socket was one
that I'd borrowed from an old 14.4k modem. It was a 'straight' RJ11
configuration. Current modems use a lead looking precisely the same but the
internal connections are crossed (for some reason?). Using a crossed lead
solved the problem. The time I wasted!!!
