Sounds like something is fundamentally wrong and I would use a repair software such as TechTool Pro (booting from the utility's CD) to make sure everything is as it should be. if this sorts the problem but it returns then it is possibly a software conflict. Let us know what happens.

Has anyone got any bright ideas? My wife's 8500/120 has developed
intermittent faults, as follows: a) It will fail to shut down, the cursor
changing from the arrow to the watch & all keyboard & mouse functions frozen.
b) It will fail to boot up fully, reaching a grey blank screen with a
moveable cursor arrow & that's all. c) It will refuse to shut down, either
from the keyboard or the switch & requiring the plug to be pulled. d) It
will lock up completely while on the 'net.
It's running 8.1 & has 112 Mb of RAM. VM is off.
