I agree that 8.6 is a distinct improvement, though I would think long and hard about going up to 9.1 (I have an 8200/120 with both on separate drives and there is a massive speed penalty if I boot in 9.1 and 9.2 did not work).

VM used to be pretty awful but I think it was a lot better with 8.6 on, so unless you have an old version of Photoshop which has a scratch disc conflict, I think VM is worth using.
