8.1 is a long way in the past for me. I sort of remember encountering
problems similar to this but can't recall the details. I'd suggest a
complete clean re-install of the the system with a run of Norton/Techtool
Pro for good measure and rebuild step by step so you can catch the problem
if it recurs due to installation of some extension/control panel or
whatever. 8.6 might be a good idea or even 9 if you can spare the hit on the
RAM. Having VM on will help with the RAM overhead though. Is there a
particular reason its 'off'?
