I'm pleased to say the "barebones" 7600 arrived safely from the eBay vendor
and happily accepted the drives from the 7200.  Interestingly it took 3 or 4
restarts before it booted fully and for some strange reason decided to
install a RAM disk which was certainly nothing to do with the original start
up routine on the  7200.

It almost seemed like the 7600 needed to "warm up" a few times before its
was ready to function fully.  There's been no problem since.

It's now running with a Sonnet G3 400MHz card and is looking good.
