InDesign will import Word documents directly into pages. Compared to Quark it's cheap!

Hi,
I've been asked to setup a facility to allow a Mac user with OS9 to read
Word documents on the Mac. The user doesn't need to write to word docs.
Is there a free or cheap program that will do this, where can I obtain a copy?
The user has Appleworks 6 which claims to be able to read and write Word
documents. Unfortunately I can't find any documentation. I have reinstalled
Appleworks to include the translators and I have placed them in the
extensions directory. Clearly I'm missing something - I hoped to be able to
click on the Word document and run the translator. Any help would be
appreciated.
