The power supply could have failed, but that's rare. More common is the
flyback transformer on the analog board failing. One fault symptom is that
it fails, then shuts down the iMac. If then unplugged and left for 30
minutes, then plugged back in and restarted it just may run, but not for
long. Either way a dealer repair would be uneconomic due to its used value.

I've only ever completely stripped down twice the current flat panel iMac as
they are quite reliable. The internal CD drive seemed fairly standard, but
I've never come across anyone who has fitted a compatible superdrive in one
of these. It isn't easy to get to.

The best option would be to buy a superdrive eMac, or if your budget
stretches, the 17" iMac.

The iMacs were never intended to be customised or user upgradeable, other
than for the basics like memory or Airport.
