The ONLY reliable disk repair software in my experience is DiskWarrior. One
of the fundamental differences as far as fixing directory problems is
concerned is that DiskWarrior doesnt try and fix an existing directory, as
Disk Doctor does, but creates a new one from scratch. This is always much
more satisfactory than the Disk Doctor approach, which takes longer and
gives much less satisfactory results.

Along with this DiskWarrior also does all the other important repairs that
Disk Doctor does, such as fixing BootBlocks etc, and it doesnt cause the
problems that DiskDoctor often does cause, which can include making a drive
irrecoverable when there are problems.

DioskDoctor does have some minor uses in specific situations, but I ONLY
ever use DiskDoctor for those specific limited purposes. I would strongly
urge anyone who has disk problems to always use DiskWarrior first, only
falling back on DiskDoctor when all else has failed. I have seen too many
systems screwed up by DiskDoctor in the past.

Further, of all the versions of DiskDoctor I have used, 6.0.3 (the version
you are using) is the only one I would use. Some versions, such as 5.0, are
disastrous in the problems they can cause. And also, certain versions of
FileSaver have a very dramatic effect on the performance of computers they
are installed on, using a very high percentage of CPU time when running in
the background.

All in all, Norton Utilities on the Mac is best avoided wherever possible,
except in extreme situations where you know about its capabilities and
limitations in comparison with other utilities. This advise extends to the
versions which are OS X compatible I have never found any valid use for
these at all.

I am sure that there will be other people out there who will jump to
Nortons defence, but believe me, my views are based on very long and wide
experience of using the various products that are available.

Subject: Norton 6.0.3 / OS 9.2.2/ G3 PowerBook

Is anyone else getting interrupted Norton Disk Doctor scans (v6.0.3, OS
9.2.2) because of "insufficient memory to complete the task"? I've upped the
memory
allocation but it still complains. TechToolPro 3.0.9 runs fine but is it as
good?
