Thank you for your swift responses. Let me go into more detail about my problem

Having never used OSX this is a guess, but have you set a checkbox somewhere
called 'dial on demand' or 'connect automatically when needed'?

Yes. But I had that option set right from the start, a year ago. This dial-up straight after boot problem only started about a week ago.

you may then want to review what things are set to look for
an internet connection without your bidding and maybe reconfigure them
to not jump in as soon as you make a manual connection, such as
subscribed or published calendars.

I have a very simple startup. Background processes to listen for the scanner and a PDA. That's all.

Just a hunch...did you set up the internet at installation, and finish the
process?

As I recall, the OS X install just took my settings from OS 9, so I guess the answer is no.

I have used the process viewer utility, which gives the following list of administrator processes:

autodiskmount
automount
configd
coreservicesd
crashreporterd
cron
cupsd
DirectoryService
dynamic_pager
inetd
init
kextd
lookupd
mach_init
mDNSResponder
netinfod
nfsiod
nfsiod
nfsiod
nfsiod
ntpd
pppd
SecurityServer
syslogd
update

and this list for user processes:

AppleSpell
ATSServer
Dock
Finder
loginwindow
Mail
Mozilla
Palm Desktop Background
pbs
Process Viewer
Scanwise Button Monitor
SystemUIServer
Transport Monitor
Window Manager

Does anyone see any strange items in there?

TIA

Roddy
