Have you tried updating to this system version, or booting from a MacOS 7.6.1 System CD, then updating drivers using the latest version of HD SC Setup. Either might fix the problem.

Indeed it might, if the HD would even show up. HD SC Setup doesn't even want to recognise the drive at all. As for CD, I think that would need me to AppleTalk the PB with my Centris 610 (which has a CD drive), share the CD and hope that the minimum system that boots from a floppy is prepared to see the CD on the network. This may be worth trying too.

Essentially it sounds to me like a disk driver problem, or possibly (but less likely) a problem with the SCSI controller on the drive.

If it is a driver issue, due perhaps to corruption at the start of the disk, do I then need to pull the disk and try it in another machine? The cable seemed to have fewer pins than standard SCSI, but I could be mistaken, as it's a while since I opened up the Centris.

Subject: "Missing" Hard Disk

Someone out there have any suggestions?

I have a PB145 which used to "lose" the hard disk. Booting from
floppy (into 7.0.1) and running SCSI Probe would show the PB at ID 7,
but no HD. If I then forced a Reset (rather than an Update) of the
SCSI bus, the HD would appear at ID 0. Usually, the PB would then
boot from the HD (although it seemed to work better when the battery
was fully charged.)

Now, however, the HD has disappeared from sight altogether. Using HD
SC Setup, it will wither report "no drives found". or (if I try
clicking on the Update or Test buttons) "unable to read information
from the drive"

Is this an internal battery problem (I noticed that there is a small
Lithium battery inside, near the speaker)?, or is it a sign that the
HD has a problem with its partition information?

regards,
Alasdair
