Thanks Andrew,

I'd already paired the laptop and T610 - I use iSync to keep the two and
a Palm Zire...er...in sync.

As for your test - yes, I see something similar:

"This is a test message :0" - 135 characters left
"This is a test message :0|" - 44 characters left

So the pipe symbol's worth 91 characters. Weird!
