Hello the List!
I'm emailing this on behalf of my daughter. She has a broadband service through Telewest, which in the last 4 or 5 days has suddenly failed - she can't get any internet connectivity at all. She has a Telewest-supplied 'broadband modem' which is then connected through a standard network cable to her ethernet port. She's using a Lombard running OS X 10.2.8.
She & I have been speaking about this and doing some tests. Basically, using Network Utility shows that she appears to have an ethernet device present, but with an IP address of 0.0.0.0 . Using System Preferences - Network her configuration appears to be correct. She is supposed to be picking up an IP address via DHCP, but there is no actual IP address displayed in Network, just the 'via DHCP' entry. So it appears that she isn't getting anything from a DHCP server. She can ping 127.0.0.1 but nothing else. All this looks to me as if the problem lies outside the computer. She's tried a different network lead, with no result.
Today the Telewest engineer visited her and did his own tests, and his conclusion was that there's nothing wrong with their equipment. He had a network lead and a spare modem, and he plugged these in, verified (using his test equipment) that he was getting a signal down the wire. Then he connected the new equipment to her computer, and there was no result - no improvement on where she was before. So he's left, confident that it's not their kit. And, although he's not a computer man, he's confirmed her configuration as being what they recommend.
So it might in fact be the actual physical ethernet port. Does anyone know any test in OS X (Jaguar, in fact) that would reveal whether or not the ethernet port on her machine is working or not? She has no other devices or networks that she can connect to, to test it out in a real-world environment.
