So it might in fact be the actual physical ethernet port. Does anyone know any test in OS X (Jaguar, in fact) that would reveal whether or not the ethernet port on her machine is working or not? I do not have Telewest so cannot speak about this with much confidence but I would have thought it far more likely that the problem lies in the settings than the ethernet port.

Has she a proxy setting to put in for the account? Is it possible she has changed "location" in the network settings? I am sure you have gone through all this already but I know from experience that a small thing like not having the proxy set properly can be the difference between things working and not and very often the visiting engineer is not sufficiently Mac savvy to know. We had a long head scratching moment a year or so ago when we could have sworn we had the proxy set properly and it turned out it was set but for the wrong protocol and, once corrected, everything worked fine.
