In case anyone is interested, I thought very hard about this last statement and I realized that I had changed things, insofar as I got a new firewire scanner. I did not consider it relevant because it had nothing to do with USB. However, installing the scanner and its software seemed to have completely rearranged the settings in Image Capture. When I reconfigured this i got my Hexa Media Drive back. Now why this should affect whether or not it worked when connected to the powered hub is beyond me but I will put it down to OSX voodoo and move on I think.
